HEALTH ALERT: IS SODA RESEARCH ON OBESITY BIASED?

IS SODA RESEARCH ON OBESITY BIASED?

Published May 24, 2013 in Food Product Design

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND—Is the beverage industry collaborating in a research scheme to dupe consumers into thinking sugary drinks aren't that unhealthy? As least one researcher thinks so.

Studies funded by the companies were more likely to conclude soft drinks did not play a big role in obesity, yet Dr. Philippe De Wals from Laval University in Quebec City, Canada, maintained a separate analysis of similar data showed the opposite, the Daily Mail reported

According to the news report, Dr. De Wals told the European Congress on Obesity in Liverpool that hiding the actual data could persuade governments against implementing such policies as 'fat taxes' on sodas.\

Of 17 reviews he examined, the four funded by the food industry concluded evidence for soft drinks making consumers rotund was ‘weak’; the remaining studies generally considered the evidence to be ‘well-founded’, the Daily Mail reported.

Written by Bruce MacDonald, a 30 year veteran of the Agri-food industry, in "Social Media Marketing in Agri-Foods: Endless Profit and Painless Gain", Bruce applies his background and expertise in Agri-foods and social media to the latest trends, tools and methodologies needed to craft a successful on-line campaign. While the book focuses on the Agri-food market specifically, I believe that many of the points Bruce makes are equally applicable to most other industries.
