Fat and bone fragments - scientist reveals what is REALLY inside your chicken nuggets
- By Ben Burrows
An American scientist has used a microscope to delve beneath the surface and has made some shocking discoveries
If you've never wondered what is inside your chicken nuggets then these pictures could give you a nasty shock.
The humble fast food snack may look very normal to the naked eye but under a microscope it's a different story.
Dr Richard D deShazo of the University of Mississippi Medical Center is the bright spark who attempted to do so and was "floored" and "astounded" by what he saw.
It may come as a surprise to you - or probably not - that there is actually very little chicken meat inside the simple nugget.
The samples, bought from two different fast food chains, contained a lot more blood vessels, fat and cartilage than actual chicken meat.

And upon seeing the results Dr deShazo feels that the name 'nugget' is in fact misleading as the little fried snacks are actually much more fat tissue than meat.
"What has happened is that some companies have chosen to use an artificial mixture of chicken parts rather than low-fat chicken white meat, batter it up and fry it and still call it chicken," Dr deShazo said in the Mail.
"It is really a chicken by-product high in calories, salt, sugar and fat that is a very unhealthy choice.
"Even worse, it tastes great and kids love it and it is marketed to them."
Jamie Oliver is a vocal advocate of healthy eating for kids and has taken a stand and tried to combat childhood obesity.
