An increasing body of scientific evidence makes it clear: what we eat may have an impact on the health and beauty of our skin. In particular, mangos are nutrient-packed and may protect skin from damage caused by UVB radiation.
Mangos contain more than 20 different vitamins and minerals, some of which have been linked to improved skin health. The presence of vitamins and minerals in products marketed as “good-for-you" can lead to a healthy bottom line for food and beverage manufacturers—according to this FoodTech Toolbox infographic, good-for-you products containing vitamins and minerals experienced sales in the United States of $26.44 billion in 2013.

In the present study, mice fed mango extract experienced less skin damage from UVB radiation than those not fed mango extract. In fact, the results showed a marked increase in collagen bundles and improved mean length of wrinkles among those administered mango extract.

In addition, mangos contain three key nutrients that are beneficial for skin health: vitamin C, vitamin A (or beta carotene), and folate. Vitamin C supports many different functions in the skin, including collagen formation, regeneration and wound repair. One cup of mango delivers 100 percent of the daily requirement for vitamin C.
Mangos deliver 35 percent of the daily vitamin A requirement in the form of beta carotene (an antioxidant pigment which the body converts to vitamin A), which may lessen sunburn and may increase yellow skin tone to make skin appear more healthful.

Rich in folate, one cup of mango contains 20 percent of the daily requirements for this B vitamin. Folate supports many different processes within the body, and researchers have suggested that some may have an important impact on the maintenance and function of healthy skin and that exposure to UV radiation can breakdown folate, resulting in lower levels in the skin.
