The Government of Canada is requesting WTO authorization to impose 100% surtaxes on certain goods from the United States. These measure would be in retaliation for newly adopted US country of origin labelling rules.

The products Canada is considering for surtax will be drawn from a list published in the Canada Gazette. The list includes, but is not limited to, a broad range of food and beverage products including certain cheese, pasta, rice, meat products, wines and ketchup, jewellery, stainless steel tubes and pipes, wooden office furniture and mattresses, all as specified in the Canada Gazette.

Interested parties are invited to submit comments in writing to no later than September 30, 2013 to COOL Retaliation Consultations, International Trade Policy Division, Department of Finance, L’Esplanade Laurier, 14th Floor, East Tower, 140 O’Connor Street, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0G5, 613-992-6761 (fax), COOL-EPO@fin.gc.ca (email)
